A New Vision for an Old Favorite
The River House Inn has long been a beloved fixture in Snow Hill, on the National Register of Historical Places, with its picturesque views of the Pocomoke River and its cozy, historic charm. The home was originally the George Washington Purnell House, built in 1860 and is one of the most elaborate examples of Gothic Revival architecture still standing in Maryland. The Purnells purchased lot “No 1” from Samuel Johnson in 1853, who was also the owner of my farm and is my direct ancestor. We are very excited to purchase this property and bring it back into the Johnson family and are diving headfirst into renovations to create a space that’s equal parts luxurious and welcoming, while maintaining its rich history. Here’s a sneak peek at what’s coming to the Cypress River Inn & Spa:
- A Fresh Look Outside: We’re installing a sleek new fence between the public lot and the inn and giving the landscaping a glow-up that’ll make the riverfront sing. Think lush greenery, vibrant flowers with a Koi pond, and a vibe that screams, “Come hang out awhile!” We will also be replanting the large willow tree that was recently cut down, but used to be an iconic spot for all locals to use for Prom photos and family portraits. Are you ready to snap those pics again?
- Dining That Wows: Get ready for two incredible dining experiences! Our French-inspired fine dining restaurant will serve up dishes so elegant, you’ll feel like you’re in Paris (minus the jet lag) but with local prices. Prefer something a bit more laid-back? Our upscale bistro menu will offer relaxed yet refined bites perfect for a casual evening with friends.
- Spa Bliss: A full-service spa is on the way, ready to melt your stress away with massages, facials, and all the pampering you deserve. Because who doesn’t love a little “ahh” in their day?
- A Dream Wedding Venue: Say “I do” by the river! The Cypress River Inn & Spa will be a stunning wedding venue, with romantic riverside settings, elegant indoor spaces, and personalized touches to make your big day unforgettable. From intimate ceremonies to grand celebrations, we’re here to bring your love story to life.
Why Snow Hill? Why Now?
As native Snow Hill locals, we’re not just business owners—we’re part of this town’s fabric. Our family has deep roots here, tied to a farm that’s been thriving since Snow Hill was chartered as a town and the very land where the Inn now sits. This land, this river, and this community are in our blood. We’re passionate about preserving the town’s rich history while breathing new life into it. The Cypress River Inn & Spa is our way of giving back to the place we call home, creating a space where locals and visitors can come together to celebrate the charm and spirit of Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
Follow the Fun: Renovation Updates Galore!
This project is a full-on transformation, and we’re inviting you to come along for the ride! Our blog will be your front-row seat to all the action. Expect regular updates filled with:
- Behind-the-scenes peeks at any renovation chaos (spoiler: there might be a few “oops” moments).
- Sneak previews of our French-inspired menu (croissants, anyone?).
- Progress reports on the spa, landscaping, and more.
- And maybe a few laughs—because if we can’t chuckle at a misplaced hammer or a paint color debate, what’s the point?
